So I know you have probably seen sponsored post after sponsored post on Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, Home Chef, etc. (There are lots now!!!) Well after reading one of those said “sponsored posts”, Derek and I decided we would try it out! We have been using it off and on for the past year, and this is our 100% honest review of it!
Okay, so first things first… We keep buying it so we obviously like it. However when we first started getting the meal box, one of our main qualms with it was that however long the time on the sheet says… add about 20 minutes. I think their time reflects how long it will take if everything is already washed, prepped, chopped, and thawed! I like to eat before 6:30, so I usually start cooking around 5:30 if I am able too to hit that time frame.
Other that that, I think our only other issue with it is that you can only “pause” your boxes for 12 weeks at a time. Yes… I know that is three months, but when you do that and you forget… Guess who will get a box. With that being said, you will get an email reminding you to pick your meals, but if you do not see that and pick your meals or cancel, you will get the top meals on the list! Us not extending our hold after 12 weeks is actually what got us back into getting the boxes..
While cooking this meal, another thing I noticed that always seem to happen is that I have a sink full of dishes to do as soon as I am done. Most times you do have to use a lot of dishes in order to create their recipe.
Now there are pros I promise! One of our favorite things about Hello Fresh is we always eat something that we normally would not cook! For instance, the other day we had carrot fries! I was skeptical about it but all you do is add fry seasoning and OMG, they were SO GOOD. Another thing we also really like is that the portions are not big so it is not as easy to over indulge because there is not much to begin with. However, their pastas always make enough for both of us to have dinner, and one of us to have lunch (unless Der has seconds :P)
In regards to pricing, we do not think it is bad! It is $80/week for us and we get 4 meals for 2 people a week. When we have this in the fridge we make ourselves stay home and cook it because the fresh food will go bad if you do not cook it. When we do not have Hello Fresh in our fridge, we find ourselves going out to eat a lot more, and that will end up costing us way over $80!
Overall, we love Hello Fresh. We have placed it in our budget, and we find ourselves not eating out as much, and that means not spending a ton of money or food that is as bad for you! I do have a few discount boxes to give out if you guys want to get half off (ish) your first box to try it out! No, this isn’t sponsored or anything like that…. this is the referral emails you can give our when you become a customer of theirs! If you want one of those, just let me know and I will send it over to you!
