This is Week 1 of my Wedding Wednesday Post series! I do not know if I will be posting a blog post every Wednesday, but when something big happens with the wedding process, I will document it here on Wednesdays! 🙂
Derek and I met in college, January of 2013 to be exact. We were at one of my sorority sister’s Great Gatsby theme birthday party and as I was walking from the garage to the kitchen I saw theses three/four crazy boys with suspenders on. I knew one of them so I stopped to say hello, and that was when I was introduced to Derek. We talked for a while, and I do not remember about what (ha!) but I do remember there being balloons all on the floor and Derek said “You want to see something funny?”. He jumped on a balloon and of course when it popped every was startled for a second. He laughed, and I huffed (trying to be cool, you know?). I ended up leaving early (no surprise there) and I did not get his number or anything! But we did get a picture! I just searched for like an hour and didn’t find it though 🙁
I woke up the next morning to seeing a new message in my Twitter DM’s (he slid right in!). A bunch of people went to Derek’s place after the birthday party to continue the fun, and he invited me over. I obviously did not go, but our conversation continued over a couple of days and we finally exchanged numbers!
We hit it off right off the bat! We were talking everyday, going to dinner, you name it! Derek swept me off of my feet and I. Was. Smitten. However, at this point I was a Sophomore in college, just got broken up with, and was not really in the right place to be in a relationship. I don’t want to speak for Derek, but I think I can attest to him not really wanting that either. We ended up calling things off but still remained friends.
About a year or so passes and we started talking again. I had randomly texted Derek to see how he had been and the first thing he says was “Well, I am in a hospital bed but I have been okay.” (I am not going to go in great detail but basically Derek was thrown out of the back of a truck on the mountain and broke tons of bones in his body.. back, ribs, etc.) LIKE WHAT?! I asked him his favorite cookie and took him some freshly baked a few days later. (Mind you I also lived in Fayetteville so it was over a two hour drive to get there!) I was also volunteering for a political organization that has camps around the country and we had been talking of just moving to South Carolina/North Carolina and we would just live there. Crazy talk, right?! But during those months were when I REALLY started liking to like him.
He started coming to Fayetteville on the weekends, he helped me move my stuff in between apartments, and we just really clicked. I knew at this point I was ready for something and so was he! Fast forward a few months, on May 3, 2015, in Hot Springs with two of our good friends after a night of fun, Derek asked me to be his girlfriend. I will never forget those butterflies when he asked me- I felt like a little girl with her first crush! I knew then, that this is what I had been waiting for.
